Our Approach

What Is Self-Guided Learning Support?

Online tutoring can be an excellent choice for many families, but it doesn't always align with every schedule, budget, or learning preference. Some students thrive when they learn at their own pace, while others require the flexibility that traditional weekly sessions may not provide. Additionally, some learners simply need the right tools and a clear plan—without the pressure of another calendar commitment.

This is precisely where Next Level Learning's Self-Guided Learning Support comes in. We harness the same expert assessments, curriculum design, and instructional planning that drive our live tutoring sessions and package it into a comprehensive, ready-to-use system. This allows you and your child to progress together at your own convenience.

With our support, you benefit from the professional guidance of a certified educator, while your child enjoys a personalized and structured learning path. Plus, live tutoring remains an option—rather than a requirement.

A Real Student. A Real Plan.

Here's What This Looks Like in Practice

Recently, a parent approached Next Level Learning with a rising 8th grader who needed to solidify his 7th-grade geometry skills before the new school year. Live weekly sessions weren’t feasible, but falling behind was not an option either. In response, we created a comprehensive self-guided geometry support system tailored to his needs.

What he received included: a pre-assessment diagnostic, a detailed report with scored and annotated results, a 26-page practice packet aligned with educational standards, a curated list of video resources, and a personalized 4-week learning plan with ongoing support from our NLL team. Everything he needed, without any unnecessary extras.

The Process

How Self-Guided Learning Support Works

Three simple steps. Everything your child needs. No pressure to maintain a weekly calendar.

Step 1: We Assess First

Before we create a tailored learning experience, your child will complete a standards-aligned diagnostic assessment crafted by our certified educators. This is not just a generic quiz; it’s a targeted pre-assessment that identifies which skills are strong, which need improvement, and which require foundational rebuilding.

Each question is linked to specific academic standards, and every response is meticulously scored, reviewed, and annotated by a certified NLL educator.

Step 2: We Build Your Child's Plan

Based on the diagnostic results, we develop a comprehensive, personalized learning package tailored to your child's unique data, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all grade-level template. This package includes:

  • A scored diagnostic report with a detailed breakdown by standard
  • A standards-aligned practice packet featuring concept reviews and guided problems
  • A curated list of instructional videos matched to each standard and identified gaps
  • A weekly learning schedule with specific assignments and pacing recommendations

Step 3: We Stay in Your Corner

Self-guided doesn’t mean solitary. Your NLL educator will conduct check-in calls at crucial points in the plan to review progress, address questions, and make any necessary adjustments. Between check-ins, families can reach out via email with questions, clarifications, and ongoing encouragement.

You implement the plan at home, and we ensure you have unwavering support throughout the process.

Everything Is Included. Nothing Is Generic.

Every component of a Self-Guided Learning Support package is tailored specifically for your child, utilizing their diagnostic data, grade level, and educational standards.

Diagnostic Assessment

A standards-aligned pre-assessment is conducted before the learning plan begins. This assessment pinpoints your child's proficiency on each standard, rather than just providing a general grade level. Available in both a teacher/parent version (including an answer key and scoring guide) and a clean, student-friendly format.

Diagnostic Report & Results

Upon completion of the diagnostic, your NLL educator will generate a comprehensive written report that details strengths, emerging skills, and critical gaps on a standard-by-standard basis. The report is crafted in clear language for parents and in an encouraging tone for students, eliminating any uncertainty about where to begin.

Standards-Aligned Practice Packet

A thorough, multi-page practice packet organized by academic standard and aligned with your child's 4-week learning schedule. Each section features a concept review box, guided example problems, and independent practice, designed to resemble a workbook rather than a simple worksheet.

Instructional Video Resource List

A carefully curated list of YouTube videos ranging from 2 to 17 minutes, selected from reputable channels like Math Antics, The Magic of Math, Math with Mr. J, Mario's Math Tutoring, and more. Each video is specifically matched to a standard and your child's unique gaps, with priority videos highlighted to guide your child on where to start.

4-Week Personalized Learning Plan

A detailed week-by-week schedule that outlines exactly what your child should do, in what order, and when. Standards are strategically sequenced, beginning with foundational skills and progressing to application skills. Specific packet sections and video assignments are linked to each week, ensuring clarity on the next steps.

Educator Check-In & Support

Your NLL educator doesn't just provide a packet and step away. Scheduled check-in calls at crucial milestones facilitate progress reviews, plan adjustments, and offer direct encouragement to your child. Between calls, email support ensures that questions, concerns, or words of encouragement are just a message away when needed most.

The Videos Are the Instruction — Not a Supplement

This distinction is crucial. In a Self-Guided Learning Support package, the instructional videos serve as the core teaching material, not merely "extra resources." They provide the foundation for how your child learns or re-learns each concept before practicing it in the accompanying packet.

Each video on the list has been carefully selected, aligned with specific academic standards and, where applicable, tailored to address the exact misconceptions identified in your child's diagnostic assessment. Priority videos focus on bridging the most significant gaps first.

For this plan to be effective, your child must watch the assigned videos before attempting the packet problems for that standard. This means not after, not alongside, but first. Engaging actively with the videos—pausing to try examples, taking notes, and rewatching unclear sections—transforms screen time into meaningful learning.

For Parents

Your Role Makes a Difference

In a Self-Guided Learning Support plan, parents act as execution partners. This doesn’t mean doing the work for your child; rather, it involves creating the optimal conditions for the plan to thrive.

Establish a consistent schedule. Select specific days and times each week. Consistency is more important than duration.

Always watch videos before the packet. Ensure your child views the assigned videos before starting the practice packet for any new standard.

Check for completion, not just effort. Encourage your child to finish each section thoroughly — focus on quality over speed.

Reach out when they encounter challenges. Your NLL educator is here to help. Don’t wait for a check-in call — send an email when needed.
